The Conference of Presidents of the EU has today awarded the 2017 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to the Democratic Opposition in Venezuela to Leopoldo López and others. President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani calls democratically elected Venezuelan Bolivarian Government and newly elected National Assembly  as “the Maduro dictatorship”.

According to the president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani, the Bolivarian Republic of Nicolas Maduro has robbed Venezuelan citizens their fundamental rights and the Maduro regime holds its citizen hostage.

- By awarding the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Democratic Opposition in Venezuela and by these absurd and out of context accusations by the President of the European Parliament the EU puts itself in a highly questionable light. By the political statement of the President Tajini the EU supports the undemocratic and militarist campaign of US President Donald Trump. Instead of the EU protesting the US accusations of military intervention to Venezuela the EU wishes now to strengthen the peace disturbing pro USA opposition in Venezuela.  By doing this the EU shows its clear political point as an international imperialist antihuman and antipeace actor, says JP (Juha-Pekka) Väisänen, chairperson of the Communist Party of Finland
