Communist party of Finland stands with Polish comrades

The Communist Party of Poland is once again facing political persecution. The Polish Constitutional Tribunal is now considering a proposal that could lead to banning the party. This is reinforced by changes to the penal code, where communist ideology and symbols are equated with fascism – a completely false and ahistorical comparison. It is a direct attempt to silence the voice of the working class and to suppress political pluralism.

In Finland, we have recently witnessed similar attempts to restrict democracy. There have been demands to ban communist symbols, even political parties, and we have seen the government move to limit the right to demonstrate and to restrict trade union activity. Although our countries are different, the logic is the same: the ruling elite wants to make opposition impossible so that the voice of the workers cannot be heard.

The Communist Party of Finland condemns these attempts to narrow democracy. The persecution of communists is an attack on the entire labour movement and on the fundamental rights of citizens. SKP stands in solidarity with the Communist Party of Poland and demands an end to the repression and the safeguarding of the party’s activities.
